History of the Cherokee Indians

First published in 1921, this book is still considered one of the few basic resources available for serious study of Cherokee history, legal documents, and biographical information on leaders and old families. Accounts of the early Cherokees, their constitution, treaties with the federal government, land transactions, school system, migration and resettlement, committees, councils and officials, religion, language, and culture are among the topics covered. More than half the book covers genealogies and biographies—of which there are several hundred—that include information on births, marriages, and deaths over a period of several generations.
