Danny Blackgoat: DANGEROUS PASSAGE
In the third and final volume of the Danny Blackgoat trilogy, we experience the young Navajo’s struggle to survive as a wanted criminal while he endeavors to reach his imprisoned family. In the final scene of reckoning, Jim Davis, a rebel Civil War prisoner and Danny’s friend, is arrested for horse theft, and Danny must choose—help his friend or remain free. Only the word of a Navajo woman can save them both, but will she arrive at Fort Sumner before the bugles sound and the hanging begins?
Danny winced in pain as the guard threw him roughly to the ground. He tried to stand but stumbled and fell. The shotgun wound ripped open, and blood flowed in red streaks down his leg.
“Stand up!” shouted the soldier, unmoved by the puddle of blood.
“I can help,” Rick said. “I speak some of the boy’s language.”
“Tell him he better walk on both legs,” said the guard. “We ain’t got time to carry a savage, wounded or not.”
